Taking the reins to help women with ovarian cancer

21 Mar 2023

Record race wins raise funds for vital research and education programs for ovarian and gynaecological cancers.

Team Teal has come to a close in 2023 and we are so excited to report that together with the Harness Racing community across Australia and New Zealand, a record number of wins was achieved during the six-week campaign!

Driver Wins 463
NSW Trainer Wins 81
Tasmania Trainer Wins 12
Total Wins 558

Each state across Australia and our neighbours in New Zealand have contributed $200 for every female driver win during the campaign, while our corporate partner Tabcorp also contributed $200 for wins during the Team Teal campaign. This winning formula sees Team Teal wins alone having raised a phenomenal $177,800.

Harness Racing associations and clubs continued to show their support, with NSW contributing an additional $14,200 for ambassador wins. Both Harness Racing NSW and Tasracing contributed an additional $200 for Tasmanian female trainer wins. We recognise that many harness racing clubs and associations matched funds for female driver wins at their track.

In addition, local clubs and community groups across Australia and New Zealand have raised funds through offering race name sponsorships, holding community events, auctions, raffles and more. This year has seen some creative and unique fundraising efforts, including New Zealand’s Southern Harness Racing producing and auctioning beautiful handmade teal scarves. Newcastle Harness Racing Club hosted the inaugural Frocks at the Trots fundraising event and junior trots in Victoria and NSW sold cupcakes, just to name a few activities.

Social media was lit up with Teal, showcasing the skill, determination and dedication of every reinswomen who wore teal pants to raise awareness and funds for pioneering gynaecological cancer research and education programs, including Survivors Teaching Students (STS). We are very grateful to every reinswoman and ambassador who tealed up the track during Team Teal.

"It’s such a privilege to be chosen to wear the Team Teal colours. To be able to raise awareness and funds for such an important cause spurs me on to do the best I can to help,"

Kerryn Manning
Team Teal Victorian Ambassador

Funds raised during Team Teal contribute to ANZGOG’s Survivors Teaching Students (STS) program. STS is a ground-breaking volunteer program that brings ovarian and other gynaecological cancer survivors and caregivers into the classrooms of health professional students to teach them about women's experiences with the diseases. The funds further support the ANZGOG Patient Referral Network program, which enables capacity building for gynaecological cancer clinical trials in regional and remote areas across Australia and New Zealand ensuring more women to have access to new and innovative clinical trials and treatments regardless of where they live.

WomenCan would like to thank everyone who contributed to Team Teal 2023, particularly the Harness Racing Industry in Australia and New Zealand and our campaign partner Tabcorp. We are grateful for the continued support and generous donations to enable women with ovarian and gynaecological cancers to live better and live longer. It's not too late to donate to the Team Teal campaign. Donate here
