ANZGOG launches its Community Engagement Program

05 Dec 2023

On International Volunteers Day, ANZGOG introduces its innovative Community Engagement Program, placing individuals with a lived experience of gynaecological cancers at the forefront of their mission.

Whether it's designing cutting-edge clinical trials, advocating for research funding, or educating future health professionals, people with lived experience of gynaecological cancers are integral to every aspect of ANZGOG's activities.

Three pillars of community volunteer roles

The Community Engagement Program opens doors for those with lived experiences of gynaecological cancers, providing meaningful opportunities to contribute and creating a groundswell of action through our volunteers, to impact outcomes for women now and in the future.

Within the program, volunteers can engage in three key areas: Education, Advocacy, and Research.

Education: ANZGOG's Survivors Teaching Students (STS) Program pioneers a unique approach, allowing gynaecological cancer survivors and caregivers to share their lived experiences with health professional students. Since its inception in 2017, over 12,500 students in Australia and New Zealand have gained a profound understanding of gynaecological cancers through this impactful initiative.

Advocacy: WomenCan, ANZGOG's fundraising arm, spearheads efforts to bridge the critical funding gap for gynaecological cancer research. Joining the Advocacy volunteer pathway offers individuals the chance to use their lived experience to represent the importance of investing in research, ultimately contributing to saving lives and empowering women.

Research: ANZGOG actively conducts and promotes clinical trials while undertaking multidisciplinary research into the causes, prevention, and treatments of gynaecological cancers. Research Community Volunteers have a unique opportunity to contribute at every stage of the development process, lending their voices to research discussions and representing the broader views of those with lived experiences.

For those with a lived experience interested in contributing to gynaecological cancer research, the program caters to individual areas of expertise. Volunteers are thoughtfully matched with pathways aligning with their interests and experience, offering flexibility in contributing at various levels.
