TEAM TEAL IN HARNESS RACING fOR WOMENCAN

From 1 February to 15 March every year, the harness racing community in Australia and New Zealand come together to support WomenCan in the Team Teal campaign. Reinswomen race in teal pants to raise vital funds for ovarian and gynaecological cancer research and education programs.

As part of the partnership with WomenCan, state HR bodies, and our major sponsor Tabcorp will donate a set amount for every race won by a female driver. Driver wins are represented in the Team Teal Tally on this page.

In 2024, we are proud to recognise that most HR states have extended the campaign’s reach to include female trainers and their drivers who represent them. We would like to express our gratitude to all female drivers and trainers who have engaged sponsors to further support their fundraising efforts.

We would also like to acknowledge all the harness racing clubs in New Zealand and Australia who participate in and support Team Teal through local events and activities.

Every year 8,150 ANZ women will be diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. Together through Team Teal, we are stronger in advancing research and saving lives.

WHAT FUNDS ARE USED FOR

Through the Team Teal initiative, the harness racing community and other sporting communities are raising much needed funds for ovarian and gynaecological cancer research and education programs conducted by ANZGOG:

Funds raised throughout the Team Teal campaign support ANZGOG’s research and education program – Survivors Teaching Students, bringing ovarian and gynaecological cancer survivors into the classroom of medical students to share their lived experiences.

The funds further provide support for patients to access gynaecological cancer clinical trials, particularly in regional and remote areas, ensuring women have access to the best available care irrespective of where they live.

TEAM TEAL HISTORY

The Team Teal campaign was created by Duncan McPherson OAM who lost his wife Lyn to ovarian cancer in 2010. In failing health, Lyn began fundraising for ovarian cancer research, an initiative that Duncan connected with his passion for harness racing, co-founding Team Teal with fellow owners and trainers, Michael Taranto and Jim Connolly.

The campaign expanded from harness racing in Victoria to New South Wales in 2016, to harness racing in all Australian states in 2017 and internationally to harness racing in New Zealand in 2018.

WomenCan aims to extend the Team Teal campaign to run throughout the year with other sporting codes.
